Isla Fernandina

Fernandina Island (Isla Fenandina) is the youngest Galapagos island due to its volcanic activity.  As Darwin wrote, it is "covered with immense deluges of black naked lava."

Punta Espinoza Highlights:
With its extraordinary black lava rocks, Punta Espinoza hosts the largest colony of marine iguanas in the Archipelago, along with sea lions and a nesting site for flightless cormorants. Located on the northeast part of Fernandina the visit begins with a dry landing. If the tide is right it is possible to use a dock, otherwise the landing is made on to volcanic rock and it can be slippery. The trail to the shore can be filled with interesting obstacles including marine iguanas and mangrove branches.

From the left of the landing site the trail leads into the lava fields. As the youngest of the islands, Fernandina allows visitors to view the recent volcanic activity. The lava itself is very fragile and full of fissures, which can cause for tenuous walking conditions.

The tide pool area just past the lava fields is a great place to sit and watch as there usually is something very special going on, whether it is sea lion pups interacting, sea turtles, rays, or shore bird activity.

Excursion options include a long walk, a zodiac ride and short walk, as well as a deepwater snorkel for experienced snorkelers. This is a dry landing.

TIPS

1. Good walking shoes or hiking shoes are recommended as the lava trails are fragile and cause tenuous waking conditions.

2. Although normally a dry landing, it can be made on volcanic rock and can be slippery.

3. Don't forget your camera as you won't want to miss taking pictures of the marine iguana colony.
