AmaWaterways & Backroads Team Up to Give River Cruising an Adventure Twist

AmaWaterways Amacello River CruiseAmaWaterways and Backroads have developed the ultimate active travel river cruising experience, which, beginning in Spring 2015, will visit Europe’s most captivating destinations.

Travelers booking one of these departures will experience a luxury AmaWaterways river cruise combined with Backroads’ immersive, expert-curated biking tours.

“Backroads is a leader and innovator in the active travel market, so they are a natural fit for us, as we are so focused on finding new, unique ways to enhance the luxury river cruise experience,” said Kristin Karst, Executive Vice President and Co-Owner of AmaWaterways.

Every Backroads tour will feature multiple expert trip leaders, custom titanium bikes, support vans, and flexible itineraries with a range of cycling routes ideal for all abilities.

The AmaWaterways and Backroads alliance will kick off with 20 Danube River sailings in 2015. In 2016, the companies will introduce a number of new tours along the Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Douro, Garonne and Mekong rivers.

“There’s so much to be gained by exploring actively and immersing yourself in the life of another place—all in your own style and at your own pace, said Backroads Founder and President, Tom Hale.

“In teaming up with AmaWaterways, we are excited to combine our trademark biking, walking and hiking experiences with the luxury of river cruising. With these ship-based adventures, guests will have the opportunity to conveniently explore European cities and countryside on a Backroads trip, with the bonus of only having to unpack once.”

Two of Backroads’ Danube River Cruise itineraries are available onboard 20 AmaWaterways European sailings in 2015. Pricing starts at $5,398 per person, double occupancy. If you are interested in one of these river sailings, please contact us.
