Aboard the AMALotus

The AmaLotus

The AmaLotus

This morning we’re leaving Siem Reap to board our new home for the next 7 nights, the AMA Lotus river boat. In the wet season the boat is able to cruise through Tonle Sap lake for embarkation about 45 minutes outside of Siem Reap. However, the monsoon rains have been heavy this year and the lake and resulting river flow is so high, the ship can’t get under the bridges near Phnom Penh. Instead, we’re on an early bus bound for Kampong Cham and unfortunately another 5+ hour ride. The port of Kampong Cham is up-river on the Mekong, about 65 miles north of Phnom Penh. By 1pm we’ve arrived at Kampong Cham and checked into our beautiful balcony stateroom. Each of the staterooms on deck #1 and #2 are 225 square feet, provide a small outdoor balcony, twin or queen sized bed, a single-sink bathroom with glass enclosed shower and a large flat-screen TV for viewing of DVD’s from the ship’s video library. On deck #3, there are 10 junior suites at 290 square feet and two owner suites at 624 square feet.

After getting settled into our room, we have lunch, a quick safety drill and the ship departs for Phem Chi Kang.
